To A Mouse Poem Analysis

In this poem the author’s attitude toward the mouse is sympathetic. He lets us know this in the second and third stanza of the poem. He apologizes to the mouse about how it has been treated by people. The man understands that the mouse needs food to survive and the only way for it to get this food is to steal it from others, but nobody will let this mouse steal. Even though they have more than they need, they do not want to give any away. They would rather kill the mouse than give it some food.
I think the best theme of this poem would be that even the most well-constructed plans can fail. The mouse in the poem had made its home in a corn field, preparing for when winter comes, but the farmer has ploughed the area and taken all the crops away. The mouse’s home is now destroyed and he has nowhere left to stay for the winter.
I think the reason Burns wrote this poem is to try to get us to see from the mouse’s point of view. Mice are one of the animals that we do not really think about. We do not want mice in our home and do not do anything to help them survive. We may feel sorry when a dog or cat dies, but the thought of a mouse dying doesn’t have as much of an effect on us. Burns wants to try to change this. He wants us to think that we should help this mouse even though we will lose some of our own food and won't gain anything. He want's us to help the other creatures, for we are all living together on this earth, doing what we need to survive.

This makes me think of a time when I once planned something, but ended up failing at it. One time I had a group project to do at school that we started on monday and was due on friday. My group planned everything we wanted to do, such as what everyone had to do, and what we would work on during the days class time we had. We started working and had most of it done halfway through wednesday's class. We were so sure that we could finish it the next day that we took a break from working on it for the rest of the day. The next day on thursday, one of our group members was sick and the rest of us had to try to finish the project without him. We weren't able to finish it during class and had to work on it at one of our houses after school. We ended up finishing it on time, but had to do a lot of extra work to get it done. If we had known that our group member was going to be sick we would have worked and done as much as we could on wednesday's class, so we could of finished it a lot sooner.
